YMCA Summer Campers Have the Edge!

The Hamilton Area YMCA believes that today’s campers are tomorrow’s leaders. Last summer, we recognized the need for a service-based camp and began working on the curriculum for EDGE (Educate, Develop, Give, Engage). EDGE teaches participants responsibility, cooperation, teamwork, leadership, goal setting, problem solving, conflict resolution and the rewards of giving to others.

Through participation in supervised volunteer activities, EDGE campers will learn the importance of volunteering and how it can truly impact the lives of others. The picture above is a recent trip to Greater Goods Thrift Store in Hightstown. Campers learned the value of resale and why thrift stores are important in today's society. They briefly learned the process behind reselling items and how others can benefit.

Valerie Budd, Sawmill Summer Camp Unit Leader says, “this experience gave the campers a new look on a part of life that they may not have seen before.”

Campers will also participate in experiential learning at challenge courses, rock climbing and high ropes courses. Volunteer activities throughout the rest of the summer may include visits to local food pantries, senior living residences and children’s activity centers.

EDGE campers will leave with a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem that will follow them through school, work and beyond.
