Active Adults

At the Hamilton Area YMCA, we’re committed to making sure every member of our community has access to the resources they need to incorporate exercise into their day for a healthier, happier lifestyle.

That’s the concept behind our Active Adult (AA) program. These group classes are offered in fun, supportive formats designed especially to meet the needs of adults age 55 and over.

Low impact group exercise classes include Aquafit, Aqua Yoga, Aqua Zumba, Chair Yoga, Cycling, Funky Fitness, Gentle Yoga, Light Weight Workout, Line Dancing, Pilates, Shape Up, Steppin' EZ, Strength Training, Tai Chi, and Zumba® Gold.

Active Adults instructional exercise classes include Novice & Intermediate Swim and beginner and advanced Tap Dancing.

Lots of Active Adults participants also look forward to our various special events and activities, which include day trips, holiday parties, guest speakers and other opportunities for learning, socializing and making new friends. We also offer a number of specialty programs, including AARP Smart Driver Course, Art Workshop, Birthday Breakfast Club, Book Club, Drums Alive, Glee Club, Ukulele I & II, Yo-Chi Fusion, and Zumba® Chair.

Aqua Arthritis (ages 18+)

Class time: 60 minutes

This non-aerobic exercise program includes exercises to increase flexibility and range of motion and decrease pain and stiffness.

Adult Beginner Tap Dancing

Have fun learning basic tap steps and energetic dance routines! This class will also help to improve your balance and coordination.

Novice & Intermediate Swim

It’s never too late to learn how to swim! Develop more confidence and an appreciation for all the health benefits that swimming has to offer.

Tap Dancing

Treat yourself to a new pair of tap shoes and shuffle off to a good time on the dance floor. Previous tap dancing experience is recommended.

Book Club

This group meets the first Thursday of every month from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. to discuss current and popular literature.

Glee Club

Numerous research studies have shown that singing can improve your mood and your physical health.  It’s also fun to use your voice to create music with others. No previous singing experience is required. Adults of all ages are welcome to participate.

AARP Smart Driver Course

In this six-hour course, you will learn defensive driving techniques, new traffic laws and rules of the road. Find out how to safely adjust your driving to compensate for age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. Upon course completion you will receive a certificate which may qualify you for a reduction in your auto insurance premiums. Two points will be deducted from your driving record if applicable.

This course is offered through Penn Medicine Princeton Health and takes place in Suite 100, conference rooms A & B at the JKR Branch of the Hamilton Area YMCA.

Fees: $20/$15 (AARP member)

Pickleball Open Play (ages 18+)

Pickleball is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong, and racquetball.  It is one of the fastest growing sports in America. It’s a low-impact game that’s easy to learn, great exercise, a great way to meet new people, and A LOT of fun!

There is no better way to explain the sport of Pickleball to someone other than letting them experience it for themselves. Each registered participant can bring a friend to try out 1 session for free.

Level of Play Definitions:

  • Beginner (1.0 - 2.0 rating): New to Pickleball. Learning strokes, serve, positioning, scoring, and rules. Can hit short rallies. Working on improving.
  • Advanced Beginner (2.5 rating): Developing forehand, backhand, serve, dinks and volleys. Sustains longer rallies. Starts playing at Non-Volley Zone. Can score and play games.
  • Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate (3.0 - 3.5 rating):
    3.0: Improving forehand, backhand, serve, dinks, and volleys. Starting third shot drops, varying shots and speed, working on control. Learning lobs with a purpose. Playing at net. All of this on a more consistent basis.
    3.5: Dependable strokes as above, more aggressive net play, anticipating opponent shots. Working on third shot drops, dinks, soft shots, pace, angles, lobs, team work and court positioning.
  • Advanced (4.0 - 4.5 rating): Consistent, dependable strokes with directional control and depth and pace. Uses all strokes including lobs, volleys and approach shots and can force errors. Consistently using third shot drops, sinks, spins. High level of opponent shot anticipation. Teamwork and court positioning evident.

There is a $5.00 drop-in fee per day.
