Hamilton Area YMCA

We now offer Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH), part of The Horizon Foundation's HealthyU initiative, exclusive to the Y, as part of our BASE programs.

In 2008, The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey and the New Jersey YMCA State Alliance partnered in the development of HealthyU - a program aimed at preventing childhood obesity through improved nutrition, increased physical activity, and parental involvement. Today, the program is implemented in all 21 counties throughout New Jersey, reaching more than 40,000 children ages 3 - 13 at 480 Y locations and 50 public elementary schools partners.

HealthyU uses the CATCH (Coordinated Approach To Child Health) curriculum in the preschool, afterschool and elementary school settings. CATCH is an evidence-based and award winning curriculum that was created in 1992 by national education and child health experts at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, School of Public Health (UTHSC) and the Michael & Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living. Results show improvement in key health measurements including increased physical activity and healthier eating.

In one of our own BASE programs where 68% of the student population comes from economically disadvantaged homes, we implemented HealthyU and CATCH activities during recess, and the positive impact was seen immediately.

  • Incidences of behavioral issues were reduced by 33%
  • Bullying decreased by 60%
