Swim Lessons during COVID-19

We are updating our swim lesson protocols and procedures to be as responsible as we can with swimmers and COVID-19. As we transition to resume swim lessons please see our updated procedures

For more information about our Aquatics program, please contact Nicole Bizuga at nbizuga@hamiltonymca.org.

Choosing the Right Swim Lesson

The Hamilton Area YMCA follows the nation-wide swim program teaching swimmers of all ages and abilities. Our swim lessons accommodate varying abilities to help foster a sense of achievement as swimmers’ progress between stages. Our program teaches SAFETY in and around the water, along with proper stroke technique.

Which lesson is right for you or your child?

Click here for Swim Lesson Selector

The Hamilton Area YMCA offers a variety of choices for classes. If you are looking for individual lessons, please see our Private/Semi-private offerings.

For Group Lessons, each new student will complete a skill assessment to better place them.

There are three general categories of Y Swim Lessons

  • Swim Starters develops water enrichment and aquatic readiness in children ages 6 months to 3 years. This category focuses on developing swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences. Parents also learn how to supervise children in the water, how to prevent accidents and how to plan for emergencies.

  • Swim Basics develops personal water safety and basic swimming skills in students of all ages. Swimmers develop a high level of comfort in the water by practicing safe water habits, engaging in underwater exploration, and learning how to swim to safety and exit if they fall into a body of water.

  • Swim Strokes introduces and refines stroke technique in older students (school age, teens and adults). Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being and foster a lifetime of physical activity.

At the Y, we believe swimming is a life skill

Swimming is also a life-saving skill that everyone should have the opportunity to learn. The Y has been teaching people how to swim for more than 110 years! We use skill-based instruction that maximizes physical activity, emphasizes safety, and elevates character development to engage families in our community. We have certified, caring staff trained to handle swimmers of all abilities and all ages. Y swim lessons stress positive values and give kids the opportunity to practice them, growing kids’ self-esteem and self-worth, while they have a great time.

Watch Cassidy’s story to see how Y lessons help teach her a life-saving skill.

Save a Life. Become a WATER WATCHER

National Water Safety Month May 1-31.

Drowning is the second leading cause of death for children ages 5 to 14, with children from communities of color at greatest risk.

With National Water Safety Month in May and summer around the corner, now is a great time for parents to remember the importance equipping children with essential water safety skills. The Y offers water safety and swim lessons year-round to help reduce the risk of childhood drowning and develop a lifelong love of swimming.

How can you get involved?

Help us increase water safety awareness within the community.  The more we get the word out, the more likely we are to prevent another death.

1.      Share our Water Safety Messages & Tips on your social media pages using hashtags.

2.      Take the pledge to be a WATER WATCHER. Challenge a Friend to pledge to be a Water Watcher, too. Print the YMCA Water Watcher Badge.

3.      Donate to the YMCA today. At the Y, we believe swimming is a life skill. Given our reach and long history with aquatic programs, the Y is in a unique position to help bridge the gap in the delivery of swim lessons and water safety education. Membership fees keep the lights on and the doors open. Donations make it possible to keep our promise of making programs and services available to all, regardless of ability to pay, including our lifesaving Aquatics programs. Diverse Abilities Swim

In 2019, the Hamilton Area YMCA collaborated as part of a nationwide pilot program to provide 75 scholarships to the Hamilton Area for Diverse Abilities Swimming. The Diverse Abilities Swim program focuses on reaching children with disabilities in a continued effort to promote equal opportunities for all. According to data from the American Journal of Public Health, children with diverse abilities face a higher risk of drowning. During COVID, many programs were paused due to restrictions. We are proud to announce that we will be continuing our dedication to make swim lessons more accessible for all children, this spring and summer! The Hamilton Area YMCA, with the help of Y-USA, will award 100 scholarships for free swim lessons and water safety education to children with disabilities in Hamilton Township area. Through the Diversity of Ability swimming program, parents and caregivers of children with disabilities will be given the opportunity to provide their children with the means to learn fundamental water safety and swimming skills in a safe environment. For more information, please contact Nicole Bizuga, nbizuga@hamiltonymca.org.

Please complete this intake form so we that we are aware of your child’s individual needs.
