Youth Sports at the Y - Start Here, Stay Here! 

The Y is the jumping off point for many kids to learn about the love of a sport, the importance of physical activity — and for developing the healthy habits they’ll carry with them throughout their lives.  Start here because the benefits of joining Youth Sports at the Hamilton Area YMCA are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes from learning a new skill, gaining a sense of belonging, or building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, participating in sports at the YMCA is about building a healthy, active and contributing member of the community from the inside out.

Youth sports at the YMCA teach kids more than how to score goals, make baskets or hit doubles into the gap; they teach character and social skills for future leaders. 

The YMCA philosophy of youth sports:

  • Everyone plays — We do not use tryouts to select the best players. No one is cut from a team.

  • Safety first — Coaches and staff make sure all equipment and facilities are safe.

  • Fair play — The Y is about playing by the rules and showing respect for all involved.

Through partnerships with like minded non-profit Travel Sports Clubs, participants in recreation sports programs at the Y will have the opportunity to Stay Here to develop their game and play at a competitive level through high school by trying out for one of these clubs.

Basketball Leagues

Basketball League (ages 4 - 5)

For our youngest players, we focus on introducing the game of basketball and basic ball-handling skills like passing, dribbling, and shooting. This instructional beginner league will teach your child the fundamentals of basketball and basic game concepts. Coaches take an active role in teaching at this level and 6-foot goals and smaller balls are used. Practice and games are held during Saturday afternoons. Practices will be scheduled 30 
minutes before your scheduled game time. Practices will be at 2:00 p.m. and games will be from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m.

League starts January 8

Basketball League (ages 6 - 7)

Children at this level continue to develop basic skills and begin to learn the rules of the game. The primary focus is on offense and ball-handling and coaches and officials emphasize learning throughout the game. One-on-one defense is introduced and 8-foot goals and 27.5” balls are used.  Practice and games are held during Saturday afternoons. Practices will be scheduled 30 minutes before your scheduled game time. Practices will begin at 3:30 p.m. or 5:00 and games will begin at 4:00 or 5:30 p.m.

Saturdays - December 4 and 11
Age groups: 4 – 5 and 6 – 7
Ages 4 – 5: 2:00 – 3:00 p.m. 
Ages 6 – 7: 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. 

This program is designed to take your basketball skills to the next level. Boys and girls will learn the fundamental basketball skills while learning, teamwork, strategy and sportsmanship, all while having fun and being active. They will also learn offensive and defensive skills like rebounding, and team play. Players of all ability and experience levels are welcome.

Soccer, T-Ball & Flag Football Program Information

Recreational Soccer (ages 3 - 9 co-ed)

Hamilton Area YMCA soccer offers a safe and productive environment for your child to learn the fundamentals of soccer, as well as the importance of teamwork.  The program is enhanced through a partnership with Mercer United FC, providing soccer participants fun and knowledgeable age based training each week.  By putting player development and inclusion first, with a goal to improve soccer overall in Mercer County, Mercer United FC looks to grow the number players playing the sport.  In addition to the skill development, all participants will engage in small-sided scrimmages, reinforcing skills learned, and giving them more touches on the ball. Weekly sessions are led by a YMCA Trainer with the support of the Mercer United FC Teams, Coaches and Players.  All recreation soccer participants will be invited to cheer on Mercer United FC as the Sawmill Sports Complex is the home for their 14 (and growing) soccer teams.

Recreational T-Ball (ages 3 -6 co-ed)

Introduce your child to baseball in a coed, non-competitive situation in which everyone gets to play. This program emphasizes basic skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship.  The program is enhanced through a partnership with the Central Jersey Rebels, providing quality age based training.  The CJ Rebels is a rapidly growing program that presents an opportunity for local youth athletes to gain experiences that take place both on and off of the field.  Weekly sessions will be led by a YMCA Trainer with the support of the CJ Rebels Teams, Coaches, and Players.  All baseball participants will be welcome to cheer on the Central Jersey Rebels as the Sawmill Sports Complex is the home for their 20 baseball teams.

Youth NFL Flag Football 
Our NFL flag football program offers a safe way for children to participate in football. Players will learn the fundamentals of football and teamwork all while having fun in a coed, safe, and competitive way. Sessions will be led by a YMCA trainer.

Personal Training

Personal Training for Athletes (ages 12+)

This program would be designed give student athletes the foundational training for their sport. The individual will gain confidence in their ability to train safely, improve their overall work capacity, and stay healthy during periods of inactivity. Focus would be on Metabolic conditioning, Foundations of strength and Core & Functional training. Days and times will be scheduled with your trainer.

Pickleball Play

Pickleball play at the Sawmill Branch 

  • 2 – 3 indoor courts available.  
  • Scheduled in 2 hour sessions based on skill level.  
  • Limited space per session.  
  • Must pre-register online.  NO DROP IN ALLOWED.  

Sessions Offered:

Beginner Play
1.5 rating — Anyone who has had some official lessons and is developing strokes, court positioning, game play, and scoring. Games have some rallies.

Advanced Beginner Play 
2.0-2.5 rating— Players developing serve, forehand, backhand, dink and volley. Sustains longer rallies. Not rushing shots.  Able to keep score and play games.

Intermediate Play 
3.0+ rating— Players with consistent serves, forehands and backhands.  Consistently comes to the net. Consistently uses dinks and volleys.  Working on control.  Developing 3rd shot drop/drive, pace, & angle shots.

Open Play 
All skill levels are welcome.

Beginners Lessons 
0 rating – Introductory classes for anyone who wants to learn how to play pickleball.  Must wear lace-up tennis sneakers (not running or trail sneakers).

General information:

NO DROP-IN PLAY.  
You must pre-register online with payment while registration is open.  Registration opens at 7:00 a.m. Thursday morning for the following week.   Registration closes when the session has reached its capacity/or 1 day prior to the session.  If you request to be added to the waitlist, do not show up unless you are contacted by the YMCA and payment is taken.

Players will use open play rotation (Winners split, non-winners sit, 2 waiting players join.  Players sit after 2 consecutive games) to allow everyone opportunity to play.

Please be courteous of the time.  Arrive no sooner than 5 minutes before the scheduled time and no more than 15 minutes after the start time.

Nets will be provided.  Bring paddle and pickleballs.  Water fill station is available.  Remember your water bottle.

Masks are not required for vaccinated individuals but strongly recommended for unvaccinated individuals.

Facility Rentals for Sports Practices, Games, or Tournaments

Athletic Fields & Gymnasium Sports Rentals

We rent gym and field space to local organizations and travel teams for practice, games, or tournaments. Our facility can accommodate soccer, softball, baseball, lacrosse, basketball, volleyball and general sports training all year round.
